چکیده

We propose that neutrino-proton elastic scattering, n1p→n1p , can be used for the detection of supernova neutrinos in scintillator detectors. Though the proton recoil kinetic energy spectrum is soft, with Tp .2En /M p , and the scintillation light output from slow, heavily ionizing protons is quenched, the yield above a realistic threshold is nearly as large as that from n̄e1p→e1n . In addition, the measured proton spectrum is related to the incident neutrino spectrum, which solves a long-standing problem of how to separately measure the total energy and temperature of nm , nt , n̄m , and n̄t . The ability to detect this signal would give detectors like KamLAND and Borexino a crucial and unique role in the quest to detect supernova neutrinos.

Supernovae and Neutrinos

A long-standing problem in supernova physics is how to measure the total energy and temperature of νμ, ντ , ν̄μ, and ν̄τ . While of the highest importance, this is very difficult because these flavors only have neutral-current detector interactions. We propose that neutrino-proton elastic scattering, ν + p → ν + p, can be used for the detection of supernova neutrinos in scintillator detectors. It...

Monte Carlo Study of Supernova Neutrino Spectra Formation

The neutrino flux and spectra formation in a supernova core is studied by using a Monte Carlo code. The dominant opacity contribution for νμ is elastic scattering on nucleons νμN → Nνμ, where νμ always stands for either νμ or ντ . In addition we switch on or off a variety of processes which allow for the exchange of energy or the creation and destruction of neutrino pairs, notably nucleon brems...

Decoupling supernova and neutrino oscillation physics with LAr TPC detectors

Core collapse supernovae are a huge source of all flavor neutrinos. The flavor composition, energy spectrum and time structure of the neutrino burst from a galactic supernova can provide information about the explosion mechanism and the mechanisms of proto neutron star cooling. Such data can also give information about the intrinsic properties of the neutrino such as flavor oscillations. One im...

Oscillation effects on supernova neutrino rates and spectra and detection of the shock breakout in a liquid Argon TPC

A liquid Argon TPC (ICARUS-like) has the ability to detect clean neutrino bursts from type-II supernova collapses. In a previous paper we have considered three detection channels: elastic scattering on electrons from all neutrino species, νe charged current absorption on Ar with production of excited K and ν̄e charged current absorption on Ar with production of excited Cl. In this paper, we stud...

Macroscopic Parity Violation and Supernova Asymmetries

Core collapse supernovae are dominated by weakly interacting neutrinos. This provides a unique opportunity for macroscopic parity violation. We speculate that parity violation in a strong magnetic field can lead to an asymmetry in the explosion and a recoil of the newly formed neutron star. We estimate the size of this asymmetry from neutrino polarized neutron elastic scattering, polarized elec...
